Amygdala volume marks the acute state in the early course of depression reports a study with magnetic resonance imaging measuring the volumes of hippocampus and amygdala.

[edit] Subjects

Subject group #1 (help)
Current first major depressive episode
Subjects/♂/♀: 20 / 7 / 13
Age: 34.1 ±11.6 (18–56)
Handedness: Right
Nationality: Dutch
Approval: Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen
Databases:

Group 1 of 20 right-handed current first major depressive episode with 7 males and 13 females were included in the study. The Dutch group had a mean age of 34.1 with a range from 18 to 56.

The study on the human subjects was approved by the Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen.
Subject group #2 (help)
Recovered first major depressive episode
Subjects/♂/♀: 20 /  /
Age: 35.8 ±11.7 (18–53)
Handedness: Mostly right
Nationality: Dutch
Approval: Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen
Databases:

Group 2 of 20 mostly right-handed recovered first major depressive episode were included in the study. The Dutch group had a mean age of 35.8 with a range from 18 to 53.

The study on the human subjects was approved by the Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen.
Subject group #3 (help)
Healthy controls
Subjects/♂/♀: 20 /  /
Age: 37.3 ±12.7 (18–53)
Handedness: Mostly right
Nationality: Dutch
Approval: Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen
Databases:

Group 3 of 20 mostly right-handed healthy controls were included in the study. The Dutch group had a mean age of 37.3 with a range from 18 to 53. The study on the human subjects was approved by the Local ethics committee, CMO region Arnhem-Nijmegen. There were 3 groups: Two patient groups and one control group. The two patient groups were diagnosed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID).

The healthy controls seem to be matched for sex, handedness and educational level.

[edit] Scanning

MRI Scanning (help)
Mode: sMRI
Scanner: Siemens Sonata 1.5T
Type: T1-weighted MPRAGE

(TR=?, TE=3.93ms, FA=15°)

Slices: 176 (thickness=1mm , gap=0mm) oriented Sagital
Size: FOV=256mm matrix=256x256 resolution=1x1x1mm
Laboratory: missing laboratory

For sMRI T1-weighted MPRAGE scans were acquired with a 1.5T Siemens Sonata.
