Neural mechanisms of voluntary and involuntary recall: a PET study reports a positron emission tomography study with human subjects looking at voluntary and involuntary recall. Involuntary recall was eliced with the incidental memory task.

Pictures from the Internation Affective Picture System and the Empathy Picture System were used. Another paper from the group deals examines the emotion aspect of the experiment.

Group 1 of 12 right-handed healthy volunteers with 7 males and 5 females were included in the study. The Danish group had a mean age of 24 with a range from 20 to 29. The study on the human subjects was approved by the Local Ethics Committee.

Stimulus: Auditory presented words previously associated with a picture (Auditory stimulus)
Instruction: Fixate, listen to words, recall picture associated with previously presented words
Behavioral response: Right hand button press (Hand response)
In condition no. 1, Voluntary recall, the subjects were presented with a Auditory stimulus. They were instructed to Fixate, listen to words, recall picture associated with previously presented words. The subjects responded with Right hand button press.

Name: Involuntary recall
Stimulus: Auditory presented words previously associated with a picture (Auditory stimulus)
Instruction: Fixate, listen to words, determine if noun refered to an object for wearing.
Behavioral response: Right hand button press (Hand response)
