Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is the controlled vocabulary of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

MeSH has 25,588 descriptors in 2010. Indexing of journal articles is helped by the NLM tool Medical Text Indexer (MTI) where the two main components are MetaMap and the PubMed Related Citations (PRC) MetaMap annotates to Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and then further on from UMLS to MeSH. PRC words with a k-nearest neighbor algorithm to assign.[1]
