Cortical areas and the selection of movement: a study with positron emission tomography reports a positron emission tomography study where subjects were scanned while moving a joystick on hearing a tone.

In the control task subject always moved the joystick forward. In four other tasks the subject selected the movement.

There were 6 scans for each subject (page 394):

  1. Fixed: Forward movement of joystick
  2. Sequence: Execution of a learned sequence
  3. Random: The subject should move the joystick in a self-selected direction
  4. Conditional: The direction specified by the tone
  5. Opposite: The direction specified by the tone. Put opposite the previous scan
  6. Fixed: The same task as the first scan.

The paper was included in the original BrainMap database as number 37.

Databases:

A group of 8 right-handed volunteers with 8 males and 0 females were included in the study. The group was from 21 up to 38 years old. The study on the human subjects was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital and the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee of the DHSS.

The results were reported wrt. to the 1988 Talairach atlas and normalized with the method by the Friston 1989 paper (page 395). The p-values are corrected (page 395).
