Chunking is, in natural language processing, the method of grouping sets of words into meaningful phrases, such as noun phrases.

The method is implemented in the Python natural language processing package NLTK.

[edit] Example

In Python NLTK

import nltk

text = "Chunking is the method of grouping sets of words into meaningful phrases."
words = nltk.word_tokenize(text)
pos_tags = nltk.pos_tag(words)

grammer = """
  NP : {<DT><NN|NNS>}
       {<NNP>+}
       {<NN>+}
"""
np_chunker = nltk.RegexpParser(grammer)
np_chunker.parse(pos_tags)
